What is petrolingual ligament?

The petro-lingual ligament is a fibrous band that connects the base of the skull (petrous part of the temporal bone) to the tongue. It is a part of the complex system of ligaments, muscles, and connective tissue that supports the hyoid bone. The ligament also helps in the movement and stabilization of the tongue during speech and swallowing. In addition, it provides a structural support to the pharynx and the surrounding structures. The petro-lingual ligament is also involved in the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea as it helps to maintain the airway patency during sleep. Dysfunction or damage of this ligament can lead to difficulty in speech, swallowing, and breathing.
